Join us as Senior Python Developer at Barclays, where you will spearhead the evolution of our infrastructure and deployment pipelines, driving innovation and operational excellence. You will harness cutting-edge technology to build and manage robust, scalable and secure infrastructure, ensuring seamless delivery of our digital solutions.  

To be successful as a Senior Python Developer, you should have experience with:

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable, and reusable Python-based applications.
  • Build high-performance backend systems, RESTful APIs, asynchronous services, and distributed applications.
  • Translate business and functional requirements into technical solutions and clean architecture designs.
  • Develop modular, maintainable, and testable code following industry best practices and coding standards.
  • Participate in system design discussions, technical reviews, and architecture decisions, Develop and enhance backend services using frameworks such as:
  • Django.
  • Flask.
  • FastAPI.
  • Tornado / Falcon / Pyramid (optional based on project needs).
  • Build and integrate REST APIs and, where required, GraphQL services.
  • Design and implement authentication and authorization mechanisms including OAuth2, JWT, SSO, and RBAC.
  • Optimize API performance, reliability, and scalability.
    Architect and implement microservices-based solutions using Python.
  • Design containerized applications and services for deployment in cloud or Kubernetes-based environments.
  • Work with message brokers and event-driven architectures using tools such as:
  • RabbitMQ.
  • Kafka.
  • AWS SQS/SNS.
  • Celery.
  • Manage inter-service communication, resilience patterns, retries, and fault tolerance, Design, develop, and optimize relational and non-relational database solutions.
  • Write efficient SQL queries, stored procedures, and data access layers.
  • Work with databases such as:
  • PostgreSQL.
  • MySQL.
  • SQL Server.
  • MongoDB.
  • Redis.
  • Elasticsearch.
  • Ensure data consistency, integrity, indexing, query optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Develop applications for cloud platforms such as:

  • Google Cloud Platform.
  • Work with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps tooling, and release automation.
  • Use containerization and orchestration tools like:
  • Docker.
  • Kubernetes.
  • Helm.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams for deployment, monitoring, and observability.
  • Write unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests to ensure software quality.
  • Follow Test-Driven Development (TDD) or Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) practices where applicable.
  • Conduct code reviews and enforce best practices for clean coding, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Use testing frameworks/tools such as:
  • PyTest.
  • UnitTest.
  • Mock.
  • Selenium / Playwright (if needed for automation).
  • Ensure high code coverage and adherence to quality gates ,Analyze and optimize application performance bottlenecks.
  • Implement secure coding practices and remediate vulnerabilities.
  • Handle logging, monitoring, tracing, and alerting using tools such as:
  • ELK Stack.
  • Grafana.
  • Prometheus.
  • Datadog.
  • Splunk.
  • Ensure robust exception handling, observability, auditability, and reliability across systems.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level developers on technical design, Python best practices, and engineering standards.
  • Lead code walkthroughs, technical design sessions, and architectural discussions.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, architects, business analysts, QA engineers, DevOps teams, and stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement in development processes, tools, and frameworks.
  • Provide technical estimates, identify risks, and support sprint planning and delivery.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience with AI/ML integration, including Python libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, or model-serving APIs.
  • Exposure to data engineering pipelines and workflow tools such as Airflow.
  • Experience in serverless architectures (AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, Google Cloud Functions).
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies like JavaScript, React, Angular, or HTML/CSS for full-stack collaboration.
  • Understanding of event-driven systems and domain-driven design.
  • Exposure to fintech, banking, healthcare, e-commerce, or other regulated enterprise domains.
  • Experience with secure development practices and compliance standards.

Purpose of the role

To use innovative data analytics and machine learning techniques to extract valuable insights from the bank's data reserves, leveraging these insights to inform strategic decision-making, improve operational efficiency, and drive innovation across the organisation. 

Accountabilities

  • Identification, collection, extraction of data from various sources, including internal and external sources.
  • Performing data cleaning, wrangling, and transformation to ensure its quality and suitability for analysis.
  • Development and maintenance of efficient data pipelines for automated data acquisition and processing.
  • Design and conduct of statistical and machine learning models to analyse patterns, trends, and relationships in the data.
  • Development and implementation of predictive models to forecast future outcomes and identify potential risks and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to seek out opportunities to add value from data through Data Science.
