Find out what its like to be a an Apprentice Security Analyst

Three years ago, before joining Barclays, I was working as a chef. To go from being the head of the
kitchen, to being part of a team that plays such a key role to the security of the bank and the
liquidity of the high-street was a culture shock to say the least. But Barclays Chief Security Office has
been absolutely fantastic in allowing me to leverage all the resources available to really jump-start
my career in the cyber security field.

With the support I’m getting to study for a degree, I’m growing my knowledge alongside my
experience.

I now work within Information Integrity Protection (IIP), which, as our name suggests, ensures the
integrity of the customer’s information remains protected. We do that by implementing
cryptography globally on behalf of Barclays. The environment is innovative, fast paced and diverse,
and no one day is the same in my role, which keeps me on my toes. Projects are fast-moving, with
tight deadlines in place set by various regulators to ensure the bank is as secure as possible and
complying to industry standards.

I get a real buzz out of my job, from knowing that something I have helped to deliver is benefitting
our customers, for example ensuring that Faster Payments and Open Banking are secure by
implementing hardware Cryptography. But not only do I have my daily job to do, alongside that I’m
also studying for a degree in Digital and Technology solutions. It’s a win-win for me, allowing me to
apply what I am learning at university to my day to day job and so improve my skillset for the
business.
