Overall purpose of role

Portfolio Management is accountable globally for all aspects of the ongoing management of the Private Bank & Wealth Management credit portfolio to ensure that the credit quality is maintained and breaches are minimised.  The role will focus on the quality of credit underwriting standards, rigor of the credit process governance and oversight of the portfolio activity. The successful candidate will also support various initiatives critical to the continued growth of the credit business.

Key Accountabilities

  • Governance and operational rigour -  working with the Head of Portfolio Management the successful candidate will have active engagement with Global Product Heads, Structurers, Credit Operations, Risk Management and other Control functions to devise and maintain strong credit underwriting standards, procedures and processes, ensuring proactive portfolio monitoring and driving global consistency.  Responsibilities include identification and escalation of issues relating to non-compliance with procedures, policies and guidelines and liaising with the Structurers to resolve any process failures.
  • Portfolio Management activity – responsible for the quality and timeliness of execution of annual credit reviews, renewals and remedial activity on breaches and excesses, by the credit teams in each location.  Drive the activity on a timely basis in accordance with Risk policies and standards and escalate early and proactively identify future pressure-points.
  • Portfolio reviews -  coordinating with Structurers to prepare portfolio reviews and requesting ad-hoc reviews where required, to ensure that all locations globally are managing their portfolio to quality standards and within expectations.
  • Reporting and tracking the key portfolio risk metrics – accountable for the definition, design and operation of the portfolio management dashboard globally across Private Bank.  To cover as a minimum annual credit reviews, grading, breaches and excesses, expiries and referrals to Early Watchlist and impairment.
  • Process enhancement and strategic initiatives – working on initiatives to drive efficiency and supporting strategic credit enhancement initiatives.
  • Audits – Support the Portfolio Head with coordination of Internal Audits and Conformance Reviews and timely production of deliverables.

Purpose of the role

To manage and optimise the bank's overall credit risk exposure by monitoring, analysing, and reporting on the creditworthiness of its lending portfolio.

Accountabilities

  • Monitoring the financial performance and risk profile of the entire lending portfolio, including individual borrowers, sectors, and geographic regions.
  • Analysis of credit trends, identify early warning signs of potential borrowers' issues, and assess the impact of economic and market developments on the portfolio.
  • Development and utilisation of quantitative models and risk forecasting tools to measure and predict potential credit losses.
  • Performance of portfolio stress testing exercises to assess the impact of various economic and market scenarios on the portfolio's risk profile.
  • Definition and setting of portfolio, segment and customer risk appetite, policy and limits. Overseeing first line execution within these parameters.

  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
