Join Barclays as a UI Engineer on our Digital Experience Platform team. You will contribute to building the foundational component library and design system that powers our next-generation digital experiences. This role offers you the opportunity to work on tools and components used by teams across the organisation, directly impacting how user interfaces are built and delivered. You will collaborate closely with designers, senior engineers, and product teams in an environment that values technical excellence, accessibility, and continuous learning.

To be successful as a UI Engineer, you should have:

  • Strong proficiency in React and TypeScript, with experience building reusable components or contributing to component libraries
  • Solid understanding of modern CSS, including CSS custom properties, CSS-in-JS solutions, or utility-first frameworks like Tailwind CSS
  • Experience working with design tokens and understanding how design decisions translate into code
  • Good understanding of web accessibility standards and experience implementing accessible components with proper ARIA attributes and keyboard navigation
  • Familiarity with component documentation tools such as Storybook, including writing stories and usage examples
  • Experience with modern frontend build tools and package management (Vite, Rollup, npm/pnpm)
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with designers and incorporate design feedback
  • Attention to detail and commitment to delivering polished, high-quality components

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience with Vue.js or other modern frontend frameworks, demonstrating adaptability across technologies
  • Knowledge of animation libraries and implementing smooth micro-interactions
  • Experience with visual regression testing tools (Chromatic, Percy, or similar)
  • Understanding of semantic versioning and library release processes
  • Contributions to open-source projects or personal projects demonstrating frontend expertise
  • Familiarity with monorepo structures and tooling (Nx, Turborepo, pnpm workspaces)
  • Experience with Figma and understanding designer workflows

This role will be based in our Prague office.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and maintenance of React-based components following modern design system principles, ensuring components are accessible, performant, and thoroughly documented.
  • Collaboration with designers to translate design tokens, specifications, and interaction patterns into reusable, production-ready components that maintain design fidelity.
  • Creation and improvement of developer documentation, code examples, and usage guidelines that enable engineering teams to efficiently adopt design system components.
  • Implementation of comprehensive testing strategies including unit tests, visual regression tests, and accessibility audits to ensure component quality and reliability.
  • Participation in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and maintaining high standards of code quality across the component library.
  • Adherence to accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and inclusive design principles, ensuring all components meet accessibility requirements and work across assistive technologies.
  • Contribution to build pipelines, release processes, and tooling improvements that support a scalable, versioned component library.
  • Active engagement with consuming teams to understand their needs, gather feedback, and continuously improve component APIs and documentation.
