I studied Applied Mathematics at university, then Econometrics at graduate school, but actually you’d be surprised by the range of subjects here. The proportion of science graduates to arts graduates in my department is probably about 6:4. If you’re interested in the financial industry, then you have a wide range of options without being tied to your major or your school’s image.
Before joining the firm as a graduate, I was a little bit anxious about whether I would be successful. But when I joined the bank, my colleagues – both junior and senior – took the time to help me learn how things worked. It was much more than I expected, and I still appreciate what they did.
I think what’s most impressive about life here is the way we work together.
Today, I work for the Global Markets team in our Tokyo office. We’re responsible for developing financial products across asset classes. I’m personally involved in funds, but we also cover bonds, derivatives, loans and more. Then, alongside the Sales team, we offer those products to Japanese investors. I actually originally joined the bank as part of the Sales team and I’ve got a bit of a sales mind, so I love that aspect of it.
I think what’s most impressive about life here is the way we work together. People consider not just their individual performance but also the sum performance of the company, and they support each other better because of it. When there’s something I need to know, I’ll talk to the sales team, the traders, the researchers, and they’ll always give me careful, thoughtful answers to my queries. You feel like this is an investment bank that truly makes good use of its global network, and that means we consistently offer high-level products and services.
