From Offshore specialist, to Business Banking and then Affluent, Chloe has built a breadth of experience

Chloe’s legal career to date has seen her work in both private practice and in-house, across a variety of disciplines. She’s been with Barclays for three years, joining us as an Offshore specialist, before moving into Business Banking, then Affluent, but always working across teams to build a strong breadth of experience. She has a particular interest in how technology is changing not only the legal function, but the business as a whole.

You can learn and do and be all you want. There are endless opportunities for training and development

The future is in our ever-evolving function

We’re regarded as a valued partner to the business as a whole, and that means we have to be interested in how we can have a broader impact on the overall strategy of the organisation. In my role, I’ve had many opportunities to present to senior business stakeholders, and the value they place on us empowers us to take ownership, to evolve and develop what we do. For example, we’re doing loads of work in the Fin-Tech and digitization space. I am the Legal Lead for the Bank’s drive toward paper reduction and enhanced digital communication solutions for our customers, but we’re also developing lots of tech solutions that will help us do things more quickly and efficiently as a function. That means we’ll be able to provide an even better service to the business.

The future is in our people

One of the great things about Barclays is that there are huge opportunities for growth. There are specialist teams, of course, but I have never felt an expectation to stay in one role, and I’ve  experienced various different roles during my time at Barclays.

You can learn and do and be all you want. There are endless opportunities for training and development, but you have to take control, raise your own profile and put yourself forward. We are not just appraised on targets in legal: we’re appraised on how we support the pillars of the function, such as innovation and tech. If you’re enthusiastic and want to do something, you aren’t limited by where you sit

The future is in our culture and environment

We have a great, relaxed culture here, where you can be the person you are. This is a truly inclusive place: I co-chair our gender network in Legal, and I know that there’s a huge appetite from senior leaders to support Diversity & Inclusion. We take citizenship very seriously, whether that involves mentoring people within the organisation, or taking our experience outside into the community – I’ve been involved in schemes such as Barclays Legal Experience Week and FutureReady, both of which provide insight into a career in law in-house to students from under-represented groups. “ Another great thing about Barclays is our approach to flexible working. That’s something I find very useful as a working parent – even before lockdown I was working from home two or three days a week. We’re trusted to work in the way that suits us best, and in a way that puts the needsof our customers first. Barclays also has a huge amount of wellbeing resources and support if you need it.
