Developing your career

Did you know 70% of job-seekers list career development as a main reason to apply for a job? At Barclays, we’re dedicated to helping our colleagues to progress. From exploring our different business areas to developing new skills, we give our colleagues the room they need to grow.

To the future and beyond

Wherever we are in Barclays, whatever we do, we are united and guided by one common purpose: creating opportunities to rise. Because we know that when we help our colleagues to rise, Barclays will rise with them. From our Barclays Digital Driving License to offering tailored development on our 12-month apprenticeship programmes, we strive to help our people to build confidence, skills and a way into the world of work.

Failure is Progress - Quote from Ann James, Technology Director

People are at the heart of our business – our colleagues and our customers. From the innovative products we create to the daily services we provide, it’s all about putting people first and bringing them together.

For Katie Mulle, that link between customer and colleague is everything. “I started out working on Launchpad, an experimentation platform involving real Barclays customers to get their feedback on new ideas.” This introduction to gaining real feedback gave Katie a lot of respect for meeting customer needs. “Digital banking is where I’d like to stay, because it’s constantly changing; meaning that we as a business have to constantly innovate to meet our customers’ growing list of demands.” From here, Katie has continued to meet customer needs, while meeting her own career needs too, “my knowledge base is growing all the time.” Because at Barclays, we’re committed to helping people like Katie move forward in their own way.

“Working here is a bit like running a start-up”

We’re designing a Barclays for the future. Our industry is being revolutionised, and our customers are behaving differently. We have different competitors, and a different role to play in society. All of this will take the talent and dedication of our colleagues, and we are committed to supporting everyone who works here to develop and enjoy a rewarding experience with us. We do this through four commitments:

Develop

We help you develop your skills and knowledge

Involve

We involve you in making Barclays a great place to work

Recognise

We ensure you get personal, real recognition for what you do

Connect

We have a leadership team you feel connected to

These commitments are aimed at giving our colleagues the best possible career with us, while exceeding the needs of our millions of customers. One of our colleagues who’s reaping the rewards of our new future focus is Sarah. Joining straight after university on our Tech and Innovation programme, she’s learnt everything about our digital business, taking advantage of our training and development. Now, she’s Digital Product Manager working on the Barclays digital channels focused on Barclaycard products.

Quote from Sarah Randall, Digital Product Manager: Working here is a bit like running a start-up. My product in the digital space is like my is like my own little world.

It’s Sarah’s job to improve our customer journey and experience, using digital to make lives easier. For this, she relies heavily on innovation, exploration and the freedom to come up with ‘crazy new ways of making lives easier’. But most of all, it’s having a team of creative and collaborative people by her side who she can rely on to help develop the best digital solutions. “Teamwork is the foundation on which we are built, we work well together – and that’s how we get the best results.”
