A business of our scale needs complex global systems. We’re constantly processing trades and transactions; providing products to our customers and clients; maintaining accounts, and much more. To keep things running smoothly, we analyse our data thoroughly – and use it to improve customer experience, offer new products, and even develop new tech.
Ready for your first step in this field? Our various Operations apprenticeships around the world offer insight on the data, processes and technology that drives our bank – as well as insight on the career you could have with us.
The structure of your apprenticeship will depend on your location and what’s available there, but wherever you are, our Operations opportunities guarantee two things. The first is hands-on experience of the ways Operations guides and drives our bank. The second is committed investment in your development, with mentors, coaches and line managers all there to guide your individual path.
You’re setting out on a significant journey with us – up to 4-5 years, depending on your programme – and we invest in your development at every step. That starts with our market-leading Talent Coach model: from day one, you’ll be assigned a talent coach matched to your needs and background, and together with your line manager, they’ll support you as an individual. We’ll also match you to an expert in your specialist subject, ready to share their knowledge.
You’ll also learn a lot from your team too in your full-time role with us. Whether you’re improving our mobile banking app in Technology; learning our regulatory obligations in Functions; or analysing the data behind our transactions in Operations, you’ll be doing real work, gaining impressive experience, and learning from the colleagues around you.
Then, there’s your studies – either a degree or a professional qualification. Either way, you’ll have ring-fenced study time to help you balance your workload, and e-learning to help you study in a way that suits your lifestyle.
First, you’ll need the right qualifications. For Operations roles in England, you need 3 A Levels (or equivalent) at BBB, and for roles in Scotland, it’s 4 Highers (or equivalent) at AAAB, including Maths or Computing.
Beyond the basics, we’re looking above all for enthusiasm to learn and commitment to work hard. You’ll also need to be collaborative: Operations touches on all aspects of life at Barclays, so it means lots to take in and plenty of people to talk to. If you’re ready for it, it means access to experts across Barclays – all with advice to help you think differently about your future and what you could do.
The next generation of tech talent is in high demand. Here at Barclays, we grow our own, with apprentices joining our global centres of technical excellence. In fact, more than 10% of our community of 4,000 experts joined us as apprentices.
For you, that means the chance to start a life-long career full of opportunity and support, where you’ll deliver critical work across our digital world. From new apps to improved platforms to the latest in cybersecurity, you’ll learn to build and deliver innovation – and you’ll learn that you’re capable of more than you imagined.

First, you’ll need the right qualifications. For Technology roles in England, that’s 3 A Levels (or equivalent) at BCC, and for roles in Scotland, it’s 4 Highers (or equivalent) at BBBB including Maths or Computing.
Technology roles are wide-ranging – Developers to Analysts to User Experience Designers – so you don’t have to become a coder to thrive here. What you do need though is the will to learn and the commitment to see your programme through. And of course, you’ll need a keen interest in helping us create the future of our bank. Ready to think differently about what’s possible in the tech world? Bring your ideas here.
There are four different areas you can join as a Higher Apprentice in Functions – Compliance, Finance, Internal Audit, and Risk – and different UK locations offer different options. Each of the programmes comes with different qualifications, meaning course duration can vary, but whichever you choose, you’ll find individual mentoring and vital skills that help us operate more efficiently as a business.

In order to qualify for our Functions Higher Apprenticeships, you’ll need to have at least BCC at A Level (or equivalent).
Beyond that though, we’re also looking for commitment and enthusiasm. Our Functions Apprenticeships place deep investment in you as an individual. That means we need you to match that commitment: you’ll turn up every day ready to work hard, push yourself, and think differently about what you’re capable of. You’ll have the backing of a global bank, and you’ll rise to that expectation.
