- Apply a clear and practical understanding of Control Plane and Data Plane responsibilities, including traffic routing, service discovery, network policy enforcement, and secure service‑to‑service communication within distributed systems.
- Engineer and maintain secure network architectures for distributed and containerised environments, incorporating network segmentation, routing strategies, and access control mechanisms aligned to platform security and governance standards.
- Proactively troubleshoot and resolve complex networking, latency, and connectivity issues across control and data planes in Kubernetes and container platforms, working across infrastructure, platform, and application layers to restore service reliability.
- Support multi‑environment and multi‑cloud networking scenarios, integrating SDN solutions with enterprise security, risk, and governance requirements, and ensuring consistency across non‑production and production environments.
- Operate with strong engineering ownership, contributing to platform stability, continuous improvement, and adherence to BUK risk, control, and operational resilience standards, while collaborating effectively with wider engineering and platform teams.
- Deliver software using Agile methodologies, actively participating in sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives, and continuous improvement.
- Champion engineering discipline, automation, and data‑driven decision making across delivery cycles.
- Strong familiarity with modern developer tooling including GitLab, DevSecOps pipelines, and secure CI/CD practices.
- Hands‑on experience with: Docker Desktop for local containerized development, IntelliJ IDEA or equivalent enterprise IDEs and Secure source control, branching strategies, and automated quality gates.
- Familiarity with test‑first, quality‑driven engineering culture with hands‑on experience in: Contract Testing (PACT), Unit Testing (JUnit) and integration testing, Performance & load testing (JMeter) and Mutation testing to validate test effectiveness
- Demonstrate strong awareness and practical adoption of AI‑assisted engineering practiceswith AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, GitLab Duo, Copilot or equivalent) to support code generation, refactoring, documentation, and test creation, while retaining engineering judgement and accountability.
Some other highly valued skills may include:
- Act as an Individual Contributor Engineer (ICE), independently driving design, build, and operational ownership of networking and SDN capabilities, while demonstrating high accountability for quality, stability, and compliance with BUK engineering and control standards.
- Work effectively within Agile/Scrum delivery models, using Jira for backlog management, delivery tracking, and sprint execution.
- Apply strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve complex issues in distributed, event‑driven systems.
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication, producing clear architecture designs, decision records, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams (engineering, DevOps, security, architecture) to deliver integrated, enterprise‑ready solutions.
- Exhibit strong ownership, self‑drive, and innovation mindset, staying current with cloud‑native technologies and modern engineering best practices.
You may be assessed on key critical skills relevant for success in role, such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking and digital and technology, as well as job-specific technical skills.
