Join us as an Infrastructure Engineer to support the design and strategic planning of our Data Centre infrastructure. Our team plays a critical role in ensuring robust, scalable, and efficient IT platforms that underpin the organization’s operations.

This Infrastructure Engineer is accountable for managing all installations and removals of IT equipment from UK and EMEA Computer Rooms. Having a full understanding of the UK and EMEA computer room demand and capacity outlook along with ensuring any company strategic plans are understood and progressed working alongside key stakeholders. All Computer Room programs relating to Infrastructure capacity changes, IT deployments, IT removals, site closures and site power downs tasks need to be scheduled and progressed to Barclays standards. The Infrastructure Engineer role will ensure an aligned central service is provided to the wider Data Centre team as well as other key stakeholders across the Barclays IT function.

This role involves working across multiple technology domains, applying deep technical knowledge to align infrastructure components with wider Data Centre design standards. You’ll contribute to strategic planning and operational excellence, ensuring compliance and resilience across our IT estate.

This role involves working standard hours but will require ad hoc evening and weekend hours. The position also requires regular travel across the UK and occasional travel within Europe.

To be successful as an Infrastructure Engineer, you should have experience with:

  • Extensive knowledge relating to all IT platforms with a comprehensive understanding of how each component integrates into wider Data Centre Design (Design-level understanding).
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Data Centre (DC) and Mechanical and Electrical Systems (M&E) at a technical level which enables strategic planning.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience of service delivery protocols and ITIL methodology.
  • Experience of running and responding to internal and external audit processes.
  • Familiarity with AI co-pilot tools and automation frameworks that can streamline repetitive tasks and optimise day-to-day operations.

Purpose of the role

To build and maintain infrastructure platforms and products that support applications and data systems, using hardware, software, networks, and cloud computing platforms as required with the aim of ensuring that the infrastructure is reliable, scalable, and secure.  Ensure the reliability, availability, and scalability of the systems, platforms, and technology through the application of software engineering techniques, automation, and best practices in incident response. 

Accountabilities

  • Build Engineering:  Development, delivery, and maintenance of high-quality infrastructure solutions to fulfil business requirements ensuring measurable reliability, performance, availability, and ease of use. Including the identification of the appropriate technologies and solutions to meet business, optimisation, and resourcing requirements.
  • Incident Management: Monitoring of IT infrastructure and system performance to measure, identify, address, and resolve any potential issues, vulnerabilities, or outages. Use of data to drive down mean time to resolution.
  • Automation:  Development and implementation of automated tasks and processes to improve efficiency and reduce manual intervention, utilising software scripting/coding disciplines.
  • Security: Implementation of a secure configuration and measures to protect infrastructure against cyber-attacks, vulnerabilities, and other security threats, including protection of hardware, software, and data from unauthorised access.
  • Teamwork:  Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, architects, and other engineers to define IT Infrastructure requirements, devise solutions, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives via a data driven approach.
  • Learning: Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations, and actively contribute to the organization's technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
