To be successful as a Automation Test Engineer, you should have experience with:

Test Automation Development

  • Design, develop, execute, and maintain robust automated test frameworks and regression packs.
  • Create and maintain automation scripts for functional, integration, API, end-to-end, and regression testing.
  • Ensure automation solutions are scalable, reusable, and aligned with engineering standards.
  • Continuously improve automation coverage and reduce manual testing effort.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.

Agile Delivery & Quality Engineering

  • Participate actively in backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Review requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria to identify test conditions and automation opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, BAs, and Developers to ensure quality is considered throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Contribute to Agile and DevOps best practices.
  • Promote shift-left testing and continuous quality improvement.

End-to-End Test Analysis

  • Analyse business and technical requirements to define comprehensive test strategies.
  • Create detailed test scenarios, test cases, and automation suites covering end-to-end payment processing journeys.
  • Validate integrations across upstream and downstream systems.
  • Identify test dependencies, risks, and environmental constraints.
  • Support impact assessments for platform enhancements and production changes.

Barclays File Gateway (BFG) Testing

  • Validate end-to-end file submission, validation, routing, processing, acknowledgement, and reporting processes.
  • Test customer onboarding solutions and file integration capabilities.
  • Verify file processing outcomes across BFG, payment platforms, customer channels, and downstream systems.
  • Support testing activities for platform upgrades, migrations, infrastructure changes, and regulatory initiatives.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for BFG testing processes and quality assurance activities.

API, Data & File Validation

  • Validate payment file formats, specifications, mappings, and business validation rules.
  • Perform API, database, and file-level testing.
  • Develop automation for file validation, reconciliation, and transformation testing.
  • Analyse test data and execution results to identify defects and improvement opportunities.
  • Support root cause analysis and defect investigations.

Defect Management & Quality Assurance

  • Log, track, and manage defects through resolution.
  • Support defect triage sessions and collaborate with development teams on issue resolution.
  • Ensure defects are accurately reproduced and verified.
  • Maintain complete traceability between requirements, test cases, and defects.
  • Monitor and report test execution progress, risks, and quality metrics.

Release & Production Validation

  • Support release validation activities and deployment testing.
  • Execute smoke, sanity, and production verification tests.
  • Participate in implementation and post-release reviews.
  • Validate operational readiness from a testing perspective.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives based on production observations.

Required Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as an Automation Test Engineer in Agile delivery environments.
  • Strong experience in automation framework development and maintenance.
  • Experience in API, integration, functional, regression, and end-to-end testing.
  • Proficiency in automation tools such as Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, Rest Assured, Karate, or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of Java, Python, JavaScript, or similar programming languages.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools including Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or GitLab.
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, and test management tools.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across business and technology teams.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience within Corporate Banking, Payments, Digital Banking, or Financial Services.
  • Experience testing file-based processing platforms and integration solutions.
  • Understanding of payment processing and transaction banking systems.
  • Experience with SQL, database testing, APIs, and system integrations.
  • Knowledge of DevOps, Continuous Testing, and Test Automation best practices.
  • Experience working within cross-functional Agile squads.

Highly Desirable – Barclays File Gateway (BFG) Experience

  • Strong functional knowledge of the Barclays File Gateway (BFG) platform.
  • Experience testing BFG enhancements, customer onboarding, migration, and production support initiatives.
  • Understanding of file lifecycle management, validations, routing, monitoring, and exception handling.
  • Knowledge of payment file formats including NACHA, ISO 20022, SWIFT, and customer-hosted file integrations.
  • Experience validating end-to-end processing across BFG and dependent applications.
  • Ability to act as an SME for BFG testing and quality assurance activities.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop, and execute testing strategies to validate functionality, performance, and user experience, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve defects, and continuously improve testing processes and methodologies, to ensure software quality and reliability. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and implementation of comprehensive test plans and strategies to validate software functionality and ensure compliance with established quality standards.
  • Creation and execution automated test scripts, leveraging testing frameworks and tools to facilitate early detection of defects and quality issues.         .
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams to analyse requirements, participate in design discussions, and contribute to the development of acceptance criteria, ensuring a thorough understanding of the software being tested.
  • Root cause analysis for identified defects, working closely with developers to provide detailed information and support defect resolution.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations, and actively contribute to the organization's technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
