Join our Developer Services Deployment Tooling Team as an Engineering Manager and lead the team that powers software deployment for over 20,000 engineers’ company wide. As an Engineering Manager for this strategic team, you'll guide and develop a team of engineers building critical systems and tools that directly impact how our global engineering organization develops, tests, and deploys software. The Deployment Tooling team will be positioned to evaluate, build and support advanced deployment tooling extensions to our established GitLab enterprise toolchain platform.

You'll coach a team of experienced engineers working on platform services, developer tooling, and infrastructure projects that enable teams to deploy their software more efficiently and safely whilst implementing bank wide controls. To be successful as an Engineering Manager, you should have:

  • Experience leading and developing high-performing engineering teams, with experience of hiring, mentoring, and growing technical talent

  • Good technical background in distributed systems, microservices architecture, and modern software engineering practices to guide architectural decisions and provide technical mentorship

  • Ability to balance technical delivery with people management, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning

  • Good communication and influencing skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders across engineering, product, and business teams

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience managing teams building enterprise systems that are highly available and scalable

  • Deep understanding of CI/CD practices, deployment automation, and DevOps toolchains to guide team technical strategy

  • Familiarity with deployment tooling ecosystems such as GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Harness, Spinnaker, Octopus Deploy, Ansible, or Nolio would be highly advantageous.

Purpose of the role

To  lead and manage engineering teams, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and support to ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions, driving technical excellence, fostering a culture of innovation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align technical decisions with business objectives. 

Accountabilities

  • Lead engineering teams effectively, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture to achieve project goals and meet organizational objectives.
  • Oversee timelines, team allocation, risk management and task prioritization to ensure the successful delivery of solutions within scope, time, and budget.
  • Mentor and support team members' professional growth, conduct performance reviews, provide actionable feedback, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Evaluation and enhancement of engineering processes, tools, and methodologies to increase efficiency, streamline workflows, and optimize team productivity.
  • Collaboration with business partners, product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions and ensure a cohesive approach to product development.
  • Enforcement of technology standards, facilitate peer reviews, and implement robust testing practices to ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions.
