Embark on a transformative journey as a Senior Java Backend Engineer.  At Barclays, our vision is clear –to redefine the future of banking and help craft innovative solutions. You will be developing a number of applications in the Developer Tooling product within the Chief Technology Office product set. This will involve playing a part in architecture, design, development, deployment, maintenance, observation, and support of Developer Tooling applications from inception through to realized business value. The in house developed applications within Developer Tooling aim to provide the best possible development experience for Barclays developers, reducing toil and supercharging productivity in application development teams.

To be successful as a Senior Java Backend Engineer, you should:

  • Have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field involving software/systems engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • High degree of fluency and practical recent experience developing backend software applications in Java and Spring Boot
  • Knowledge and experience of using Docker for application containerization - building application images from Docker files and running Docker containers, management of images and tags in container registries
  • Experience of deploying applications in one or more of these cloud platforms: AWS, GCP, Azure
  • Experience with developing applications that contain a SQL database tier, ideally MS SQL and Postgres.

Other highly valued skills include:

  • High degree of fluency and practical recent experience developing software applications in Go (Golang)

  • Experience with hosting containerized applications on one or more of these orchestration platforms: Kubernetes, Redhat OpenShift, AWS ECS/Fargate/EKS.

  • Solid grasp, technical skills, and proven experience of CI/CD platforms such as Jenkins or GitLab.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
