Join us as a API Gateway Designer at Barclays, where you will spearhead the evolution of our infrastructure and deployment pipelines, driving innovation and operational excellence. You will harness cutting-edge technology to build and manage robust, scalable and secure infrastructure, ensuring seamless delivery of our digital solutions.  

  • To be successful as a API Gateway Designer, you should have experience with:
  • Strong hands-on experience in API Gateway technologies (Tyk / Apigee / Kong / Service Mesh / MuleSoft) with deep understanding of routing, authentication, policy enforcement, and API lifecycle management.
  • Solid expertise in API security concepts – JWT (HMAC/RSA), OAuth2, mTLS, certificates, encryption and authorization mechanisms.
  • Experience in Open API (OAS) design and validation, API contract-first development, and ensuring compliance with API standards.
  • Strong understanding of microservices architecture and REST-based integrations.
  • Hands-on experience with DevOps and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab / Jenkins), including API onboarding, deployment automation, and environment promotions.
  • Experience in containerized environments (OpenShift / Kubernetes) and cloud-native deployments.
  • Good exposure to observability tools (logging, monitoring, tracing – ELK / OpenTelemetry / AppD) and troubleshooting production issues.
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts – TLS, reverse proxy, firewall, routing, certificates.
  • Proven ability to work across multiple teams and lead API onboarding / platform initiatives.
  • Strong ownership mindset with ability to lead technical discussions, review designs, challenge gaps, maintain documentation, and guide junior team members.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience specifically with Tyk Gateway (Dashboard, Pump, MDCB, plugins/middleware) or similar extensible gateway architecture.
  • Knowledge of payment domain / financial APIs.
  • Experience in high-availability and resilience design (active-active setups, BCP migration, disaster recovery planning).
  • Exposure to policy design and governance frameworks for API onboarding, access control, and compliance.
  • Hands-on experience with performance testing / NFT / scalability tuning for API platforms.
  • Understanding of security and compliance standards (CSO, vulnerability management, certificate lifecycle).
  • Familiarity with API analytics and developer portal capabilities for API consumption and reporting.

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
