Join us as a Lead Backend Engineer -VP at Barclays, where you'll take part in the evolution of our digital landscape, driving innovation and excellence. As a part of the team, you will deliver technology stack, using strong analytical and problem-solving skills to understand the business requirements and deliver quality solutions. You'll be working on complex technical problems that will involve detailed analytical skills and analysis. This will be done in conjunction with fellow engineers, business analysts and business stakeholders. 

To be successful as a Lead Backend Engineer -VP, you should have experience with:

  • Own the application database landscape for Cash Settlements and Post‑Trade platforms, covering Oracle, SQL Server, and Elasticsearch & ensure high availability, performance, scalability, and data integrity for business‑critical settlement systems operating at scale.

  • Lead database performance tuning and capacity planning for high‑volume, low‑latency settlement and payment workloads & define and implement data lifecycle management strategies, including archival, purge, and retention, aligned to regulatory, audit, and business requirements.

  • Design and govern scalable data models and access patterns to support growth in settlement volumes and evolving business use cases.

  • Partner with application architects and engineering teams to design robust data solutions across the post‑trade settlement lifecycle (trade events, enrichment, validation, exception management, payment generation, settlements, reconciliation) & advise on and implement data resilience strategies, including HA/DR design, failover testing, and recovery automation.

  • Provide technical leadership on data consistency, idempotency, lineage, and traceability, supporting control and risk frameworks & support search, analytics, and operational visibility use cases using Elasticsearch and related platforms.

  • Contribute to modernisation initiatives, including migration, re‑platforming, and adoption of cloud‑based data platforms (e.g., Snowflake) & embed database engineering standards into CI/CD pipelines, release processes, and operational runbooks.

  • Communicate database risks, trade‑offs, and design decisions clearly to senior technology, operations, and risk stakeholders.

  • Strong hands‑on expertise in Oracle and SQL Server, including performance tuning, HA/DR, backup/recovery, and capacity management.

  • Experience operating Elasticsearch in largescale, production environments & deep understanding of data modelling, indexing strategies, query optimization, and transactional vs analytical workloads.

  • Proven experience supporting mission‑critical financial systems with strict SLA and resilience requirements.

Some other highly valued skills may include: 

  • Experience with Snowflake or similar cloud data platforms & exposure to hybrid and cloud‑native data architectures.

  • Familiarity with automation, Infrastructure‑as‑Code, and modern DevOps practices.

  • Strong understanding of event‑driven and API‑based architectures and their data implications.

  • Solid grasp of data governance, retention, and audit controls in regulated environments.

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
