As a Data Protection Officer, you will ensure compliance with India's Digital Personal Data Projection Act and global privacy regulations, safeguarding the accuracy, integrity, and confidentiality of personal data across our businesses.
Join us as an Assistant Vice President - Data Protection Officer.

In this role, you will support the APAC Data Privacy function, working closely with stakeholders across business and compliance teams to design, implement, and monitor data protection policies, controls, and governance frameworks. You will also advise on compliance requirements in the context of outsourcing, technology, and new product approval processes.

To be successful as an Assistant Vice President - Data Protection Officer, you should:

  • Demonstrate strong expertise in Indian and international data protection laws (e.g., IT Act, DPDP Act, GDPR, PDPA).

  • Have experience in driving compliance initiatives, risk assessments, and data privacy frameworks in financial services.

  • Be confident in engaging senior stakeholders, managing regulatory obligations, and ensuring operational adherence to data privacy standards.


Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of Indian data protection and privacy laws (IT Act, DPDP Act) and global/APAC frameworks(GDPR, PDPA)

  • Experience working in Data Privacy or Data Protection roles within an internal financial services organisation.

  • Proven expertise in risk identification, impact assessments, and controls related to data usage, outsourcing, and third-party risk.

  • Hands-on experience with data transfer processes, subject access requests, and privacy risk management.

  • Strong stakeholder management and ability to engage across compliance, legal and technology teams.


Desirable Skills/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in handling data privacy within outsourcing/vendor management environments.

  • Knowledge of technology-related risks and ability to align privacy requirements with product and innovation processes.

  • Prior exposure to compliance monitoring, assurance, and regulatory reporting.

  • Ability to train, advise, and guide business leaders on data privacy and protection issues.

The location is based out of Pune/Mumbai.

Purpose of the role

To support the design and implementation of the Bank’s Data Privacy Framework, monitor and report on the Bank’s adherence to its obligations and commitments in relation to the responsible handling of personal data, and act as a point of contact with Data Protection Authorities (DPAs). 

Accountabilities

  • Development and maintenance of the Bank’s Data Privacy Framework, including the content of Data Privacy policies, processes and procedures and other artefacts, and supporting the Bank’s Data Protection Officers in monitoring and reporting on adherence to these.
  • Provision of specialist support to Business Oversight Compliance teams in their oversight of the, identification, assessment and management of potential Data Privacy risks arising from the processing of personal data and implementation of the Bank’s Data Privacy Framework.
  • Co-ordination of the response to personal data breaches, including appropriate containment and remediating actions, and, where personal data breaches are assessed as triggering a requirement to report to regulators, reviewing and then co-ordinating with 1LoD, Legal and BOC to ensure any such incidents are notified to regulators and impacted individuals in accordance with relevant statutory timeframes.
  • Management of Barclays relationship with DPAs by acting as a point of contact for them and ensuring timely responses to regulatory complaints and investigations, queries, and formal consultations.
  • Collaboration with 1LOD Data Privacy SMEs, Legal, and other relevant Compliance teams and risk management functions to facilitate a comprehensive approach to the management of Compliance Risk and other related risks.
  • Barclays representation in key Data Privacy industry groups and associations, and use intelligence gained from these to identify areas for improvement and implementation of enhancements to the Data Privacy Framework.
  • Education and awareness support to employees in relation to Data Privacy, including maintenance of Group-wide mandatory training courses on Data Privacy to ensure employees are clear on their data privacy obligations, how to manage personal data securely, and how to identify and report personal data breaches.
