Vice President Sterling Solution Designer

Step into the role of Vice President Sterling Solution Designer. At Barclays, we are more than a Bank, we are force of progress. As a Vice President Sterling Solution Designer you will spearhead the evolution of our Container First digital strategy, driving innovation and operational excellence. You will harness niche technology space to build and manage robust, scalable, and secure digital solutions using Sterling Product suite.  

To be successful in this role, you must have:

• Demonstrated mastery of software design principles for building secure, fault-tolerant and scalable enterprise systems.

• Proven experience designing high-throughput, low-latency systems optimized for financial transaction processing.

• Proficiency in developing comprehensive high level and detailed solution designs, including detailed blueprints and precise technical documentation.

• Strong technical leadership capabilities for resolving complex challenges while effectively mentoring junior team members.

• Deep expertise in IBM Sterling Product suite like Sterling Integrator, Sterling File Gateway, Sterling Secure Proxy, SEAS.

• Advanced knowledge of development tools like Sterling Map Editor, BPML, Java tasks and XSLTs.

• Deep understanding of the EBICS (Electronic Banking Internet Communication Standard) protocol, including hands-on experience with EBICS message signing, encryption, and authentication using X.509 certificates.

• Knowledge of API security protocols and authentication mechanisms OAuth2, JWT, mTLS, etc.

• Solid experience managing both relational (RDBMS) and NoSQL database technologies. Candidates with extensive work experience on Oracle DB will be preferred.

• Comprehensive understanding of event-driven architecture patterns and microservices implementation strategies.

• Demonstrated ability with implementing observability solutions including hands-on exposure with tools like ELK, ESAAS & AppD.

• Strong command of agile development methodologies and practices.

• Proficient with Git (or equivalent version control systems), CI/CD pipelines, and collaborative Git workflows.

• Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills across technical and business domains.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

• Knowledge of File Transfer protocols like SFTP, FTPs, IBM Connect Direct, as well as real time messaging like MQ.  

• Exposure working with HSMs (Hardware Security Module) integration, including knowledge of PKCS#11, JCE (Java Cryptography Extension), and KMIP protocols for HSM interaction

• Applied knowledge of advanced testing methodologies including TDD, BDD, and automated testing frameworks.

• Experience designing and implementing multi-level signatory workflows for corporate payment approvals.

• Working knowledge of ITIL-based release and change management processes.

• API lifecycle management, developer portals, and sandbox environments.

• Experience scaling and governing large API ecosystems with federated ownership models.

• Advanced troubleshooting capabilities for diagnosing and resolving complex performance issues related to system latency and throughput.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop, and implement solutions to complex business problems, collaborating with stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements, and design and implement solutions that meet those needs and create solutions that balance technology risks against business delivery, driving consistency. 

Accountabilities

• Design and development of solutions as products that can evolve, meeting business requirements that align with modern software engineering practices and automated delivery tooling. This includes identification and implementation of the technologies and platforms.
• Targeted design activities that apply an appropriate workload placement strategy and maximise the benefit of cloud capabilities such as elasticity, serverless, containerisation etc.
• Best practice designs incorporating security principles (such as defence in depth and reduction of blast radius) that meet the Bank’s resiliency expectations.
• Solutions that appropriately balance risks and controls to deliver the agreed business and technology value.
• Adoption of standardised solutions where they fit. If no standard solutions fit, feed into their ongoing evolution where appropriate.
• Fault finding and performance issues support to operational support teams, leveraging available tooling.
• Solution design impact assessment in terms of risk, capacity and cost impact, inc. estimation of project change and ongoing run costs.
• Development of the requisite architecture inputs required to comply with the banks governance processes, including design artefacts required for architecture, privacy, security and records management governance processes.
